The brain is a complex and dynamic system. Individual neurons can be modeled mathematically with considerable accuracy. But what emerges from the interaction of millions of neurons? And where in the brain is information encoded?

Tilo Schwalger, ECDF Professor of "Data Assimilation in Neuroscience" at Technische Universität Berlin and his doctoral researcher Nils Greven develop mathematical methods to investigate the fundamental mechanisms underlying cognitive functions across all levels and scales. On October 14, 2026, they will present the theoretical models they have developed and explain how these models can be used to study the mechanisms of information processing and storage. They will also demonstrate how these methods can be applied in a range of other fields.
